Why You Should See An All Care Physiotherapist Before And After You Have Your Baby

Pregnancy is an exciting time of life with the joy and expectation of having a baby in the near future. However, there are changes that occur to your body during pregnancy that can result in issues that we can help with.

As the baby grows there are changes to your hormones, posture and a change in body balance. Fifty percent of women suffer low back pain during pregnancy. The growth of the baby in your tummy causes pressure on the pelvic floor muscles as these have to support the pressure from above and 67 percent of women will suffer incontinence when they laugh, cough, sneeze or exercise.

Up to one hundred percent of women will experience a widening of their abdominal muscles by the end of the third trimester.

During pregnancy, the hormone relaxin has an effect of softening your ligaments of your pelvis and can lead to sacroiliac joint or pubic symphysis dysfunction with increased mobility of these joints. This can result in pain at these joints with movement like getting in and out of a car, stairs, weight bearing activities or rolling over in bed.

Your All Care Physiotherapist can help during pregnancy with

  • Advice and education on how to manage the pregnancy related changes in dealing with everyday life’s activities, exercise and work to minimise pain and dysfunction.
  • Postural advice, correction and strengthening.
  • Assessment and exercises to strengthen your abdominal and pelvic floor muscles.
  • Assessment and treatment of joint and muscle pains that are commonly experienced during pregnancy.
  • Prescription of pelvic joint belts or compression pants to help with pelvic joint pain.

After the arrival of your new baby, there can be a variety of issues that can result from pregnancy, labour and delivery. Being a mother is both an exciting and busy time of life but a good review and assessment of your abdominal and pelvic floor muscle function, pelvic joints and other areas can help you recover and function more effectively.
