Vestibular Physiotherapy: Robin’s Experience at All Care Physiotherapy

Robin, a 54-year-old cyclist, woke early one morning to go to the toilet. As he walked there, he felt very wobbly on his feet.He went back to bed and when his alarm went off two hours later, Robin could not sit up out of bed without the whole room spinning violently around him for 1 minute. After three days Robin eventually was able to sit up and slowly move around, but any time he tipped his head up or down, he would experience this room spinning dizziness and feel extremely nauseas.

Robin went to his GP expecting something to be dangerously wrong with him.His GP sent him for several brain scans and blood tests which took two weeks, all tests came back clear. His GP then suggested he see Jessica at All Care Physiotherapy for a vestibular assessment as he may have Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV).

Robin was very anxious prior to the physiotherapy session, expecting BPPV to be something very bad, as he had felt awful for over two weeks.

Jessica assessed Robin using her specialised skills and infrared video recording goggles to get a clear understanding and exact diagnosis for Robin. This testing involved looking at Robin’s head movement, eye movement and balance. Some of the tests required Robin to lay down quickly, which brought some dizzy symptoms on to help with a correct diagnosis. Jessica reassured Robin and educated him on what BPPV is and eased his worries and fears.

At the assessment consultation Jessica was able to commence treatment immediately. By the second treatment two days later, Robin felt much better and was no longer getting big spinning symptoms. By the third physiotherapy session the following week, Robin felt back to 100% and was able to start cycling again.
